ALMRAUSCH

Bernhard Ludwig Rieger – 2023

AlpinPopArt-spatial installation with cows

Original painting 200 x 120 cm - mixed media with acrylic lacquer

With “Almrausch”, Bernhard Rieger brings the Zugspitze region into Magic Bavaria: colourful, alpine and shaped by a feeling for the calm of the Bavarian mountains.

The artwork shows a mountain panorama around Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Rieger’s AlpinPopArt style. Cows on the alpine pasture, the Zugspitze in the background and a traditional Wiesmahdstadel connect Bavaria’s alpine cultural landscape with contemporary art.

THE IDEA BEHIND THE WORK

For Magic Bavaria, Bernhard Rieger was invited to help shape a themed area inspired by his home region, the Zugspitze area. At the centre is Germany’s highest mountain - not as a classical landscape view, but as a bright, modern interpretation.

“Almrausch” shows an early scene in the mountains: cows on the alpine pasture, a clear morning mood and the mountain massif from the Alpspitze to the Zugspitze. The colours are strong, almost loud. The atmosphere remains calm and harmonious.

THE ORIGINAL AND THE SPATIAL INSTALLATION

The original painting “Almrausch” by Bernhard Rieger was created in 2023 in the format 200 x 120 cm. It forms the artistic basis for the large-format canvas version at Magic Bavaria.

For the interactive exhibition, the motif was transferred onto a large canvas and developed together with the artist as a spatial installation. The cow and calf models were also designed by Bernhard Rieger and continue the visual world of the painting.

This turns the original artwork into a walk-in Bavarian image world: the alpine scene does not remain on the canvas, but continues into the room. Visitors enter into a relationship with the artwork and experience the Zugspitze region from a new perspective.

Note: The original painting is currently kept in the Magic Bavaria archive and is not publicly displayed.

BAVARIAN CONTEXT AND ARTISTIC CLASSIFICATION

“Almrausch” connects two worlds: the fast, digital present of the city and the cultural landscape of Bavaria’s mountain regions, which has grown over centuries.

An important symbol in the picture is the Wiesmahdstadel. This traditional barn form still shapes meadows, alpine pastures and villages in the Werdenfelser Land, the artist’s home region.

This makes “Almrausch” a modern interpretation of Bavaria between PopArt, a sense of home and alpine tradition - and a visible part of the Local Art at the Magic Bavaria experience museum in Munich.

ABOUT BERNHARD RIEGER

Bernhard Rieger comes from the Zugspitze region. In his AlpinPopArt, he translates alpine motifs, Bavarian landscapes and images of home into a colourful, contemporary visual language.

For Magic Bavaria, he developed “Almrausch” as an artistic spatial installation that brings his home region into the interactive exhibition: strong in colour, calm in atmosphere and clearly rooted around Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Zugspitze.

EXPERIENCE ALMRAUSCH AT MAGIC BAVARIA

“Almrausch” invites you to pause for a moment - almost like on a hike in the mountains. Colour, mountain panorama, cow models and spatial staging come together to create a piece of the Bavarian mountain world that you can experience at Magic Bavaria.
