Energy through movement: Our new interactive bicycle room

How much energy do you actually have inside you? You can find out for yourself in our new bicycle room.
Sit on one of the bicycles and pedal hard. After a few seconds, the LED column in front of you will begin to light up. The more electrical power you generate, the higher the light rises.
This turns your own movement into a visible experience.

Generating electricity with muscle power
When you pedal, your muscle power sets the pedals in motion. This movement drives a generator, which produces electrical energy. The electricity then powers the LED column.
The way is very simple:
Muscle power → Movement → Generator → Electricity → Light
The installation responds to your input after approximately five seconds. When the LED column is fully illuminated, you generate up to 95 watts of electrical power, depending on the light color.
This makes visible something that usually remains hidden in everyday life: electricity must first be generated before we can use it to power lights, devices or machines.
What does a bicycle have to do with a power plant?
The principle from our bicycle storage room is also used in a similar form in many power plants. Movement drives a generator that produces electrical energy.
In a wind turbine, the rotor blades move due to the wind. In a hydroelectric power plant, flowing water sets a turbine in motion. Steam can also drive turbines, for example in biomass, gas, or geothermal power plants.
In the bicycle room, you provide the power yourself. Instead of wind, water, or steam, your own muscle power sets the generator in motion.
Bavaria is more than tradition
At Magic Bavaria, we showcase Bavaria from diverse perspectives. These include well-known traditions, special places, and typical Bavarian motifs. But Bavaria also stands for research, technology, and new ideas.
Munich and Bavaria are important locations for universities, research institutions, and innovative companies. Here, solutions for energy, mobility, digitalization, and the technologies of tomorrow are being developed. We want to showcase precisely this modern and future-oriented side of Bavaria in our exhibition.
The bicycle room therefore combines several themes: movement, technology, energy, and hands-on experimentation. You don't just read about how a generator works, but you set it in motion yourself.
Trying and comparing together
The new space is designed as a shared, interactive experience. Families can test together how quickly the LED columns react. Friends can compare who can project the light the highest. Children and teenagers experience firsthand what lies behind concepts like power, energy, and electricity generation.
This isn't about athletic performance. You can pedal at your own pace and directly observe how the installation reacts to your movements.
The blacklight room, the bicycles and the glowing LED columns also provide a special backdrop for photos and short videos.
A new room in the Magic Bavaria adventure world
At Magic Bavaria, you can expect to find more than 30 interactive photo spots, optical illusions, creative backdrops, local art and interesting facts about Bavaria spread across approximately 1,000 square meters.
You can stand upside down in the King's Hall, seemingly balance across Marienplatz, take a seat in the turquoise ball pit mountain lake, or discover new perspectives in the ice crystal mirror room.
The new bicycle storage area complements this experiential world, showcasing Bavaria's innovative side. It demonstrates that Munich stands not only for history and tradition, but also for research, technology, and the future.
